Variety Is The Spice Of Life

Variety Is The Spice Of Life.

A phrase coined by William Cowper from my home county Hertfordshire. I happen to agree with this phrase is almost all ways but especially when it comes to food.
Variety is a must when thinking about eating and drinking. If you ate the same meal everyday fro lunch and supper, even your favourite meal cooked to perfection, it would taste bland and unexciting after a short amount of time.
To get the most out of food you need to to be exciting and have you really enjoying every part, not only eating it but cooking it too.
This is probably why you have found this blog, you are bored of the meals you can cook and are eager to learn more recipes, try new dishes and ultimately eat some exciting and delicious meals.
I have compiled a short list of favourite meals, some classic dishes as well as a few treats and small bites that I plan to make YouTube videos for in September and beyond.
Here is the list and please don't hesitate to leave a comment suggesting any others you feel should have made the list or just a note about the list as it is!
  1. Spaghetti Bolognese
  2. Chicken Korma
  3. Cottage Pie
  4. Lasagne
  5. Chicken and Mushroom Pie
  6. Carbonara
  7. Thai Green Curry
  8. Garlic Bread
  9. Spring Rolls
  10. Somerset Pork
  11. Chilli Con Carne
  12. Garlic Lemon Chicken
  13. Herb Butter
  14. Chilli oil and Garlic Oil
  15. Braised Salmon With Soft Cheese Sauce
  16. Steak and Peppercorn Sauce
  17. Lemon Chicken Risotto
  18. Vegetarian Special

There will also be a "Perfection Section" with what I believe to be the only "right" way to do these items, although as the title suggests Variety is always good to try so please adapt these when they come and see if you can make any improvements.

 I dare you...
  1. The Perfect Chocolate Cake
  2. The Perfect Roux Sauce
  3. The Perfect Tomato Sauce
  4. Perfect Roast Potatoes

Remember to Turn Off the Oven...

...Before You Go On Holiday

That's right avid readers! Student Cookery is away for a camping trip and won't be able to keep up with the daily blogging. (Although we will try via iPhone) Nevertheless here's a scent for those of you who are scratching on the kitchen door begging to come in after smelling brownies.

You can watch the introduction to the videos that will be arriving in September on the Student Cookery YouTube Channel here: Student Cookery Channel

Student Cookery - Starters

Student Cooking - Starters

Today I've been thinking about which recipes to choose to start off the Student Cooking series. The trouble is pleasing everyone. Something quite 'safe' that pretty much everyone likes is spaghetti bolognese.

This is a classic Italian pasta dish with a tomato and beef mince sauce. If you have never tried spaghetti bolognese i don't know where you have been all your life but it is a must try recipe and one of the most simple!

Not only this but for all of you students out there I found this is one of the cheapest meals I can make because you can make it once and have it for maybe 5 or 6 meals. Obviously you probably wouldn't want to eat the same thing 5 days in a row but then again you might really really love spaghetti bolognese!

Another one of my all time favourite dishes is the popular curry dish, chicken korma. Although possibly not as popular as chicken tikka masala, the classic English curry dish, it is definitely a staple food for me.

The korma is so simple to make and with the right blend of spices and other key ingredients it can make for a delicious meal.

The great thing about any curry dish is you can tailor the level of spice and other flavours to your own preference. For example I love the ground almond texture and flavour is korma so i add a few spoons extra, try it out for yourself?

So there's a taste of what to expect when the recipes start flowing in September. Hope you can join in a remember you can watch all the recipes unfold on the channel:

Student Cookery - The Beginning

Student Cookery. - The Beginning

This September will be my second year at The University of Plymouth studying Mechanical Engineering. Although this might seem an unusual mix, i am interested in not only fluid mechanics and bending beam stress theory but also Cooking...

I have found that after a hard day of lectures or a gruelling football match it's not long until I feel peckish. I see cooking as not only a way to stay alive but a stress reliever and a lot of fun!

I have been cooking since the day my dad taught me to chop an onion and although I'm no Michelin Star chef, I think I have a few hints and tips not just for students but for those taking their first baby steps into cooking... on a budget!

If you still have yet to step away from the frozen aisle and into the fresh meat and vegetable, or have used the microwave so much you've forgotten what an oven is then this blog is for you.

I will show you how to live comfortably on less than £20 a week, I will guide you from chopping onions to the king of curries and perfect pastas.

Still not good enough?

There will a YouTube channel starting in September at: Student Helper Channel with videos of each recipe and everything that goes with it. Shopping lists, budget planners, recipes and more will all be on this blog and hopefully a recipe book at the end of the year!

So take the leap and discover cooking for the first time!
